As you move along the "green continuum," it's time to take a look at your next steps. Chain of Custody certification? Check! Upping your PCW content in your paper? Indeed! Using inks containing a high percentage of "
Bio-Derived Renewable Content?" Yes! Implementing your Lean manufacturing processes? Done!
Now you can take a look at your energy consumption. If
Frito-Lay can do it with a plant in Connecticut, you can too. With a little help from your friends - those folks at the state and federal level offering incentives, grants, and loans.
The
State of Connecticut awarded a grant as part of their
Energy Independence Act, and the
Department of Energy awarded a
DOE Industrial Technology Program grant.
In its Killingly CT plant, Frito-Lay will generate almost 100% of the plant's electricity and will use waste heat generated to produce steam for product manufacturing. The system combines heat and power to take the 300,000 square foot plant off the grid by generating 5 megawatts of electricity.
