Your Business Card is CRAP!

By Adam Dewitz

I somehow missed this video that has been making the rounds on YouTube for a few years:

“doesn't fit in a Rolodex because it doesn't belong in a Rolodex.”

Thanks for sharing this Adam. It's funny, ridiculous, and true all at the same time.

Dave, I agree. There first time I watched I laughed at how ridiculous it was. The second time watching he started to persuade me. The third time watching I was ordering fancy business cards. According to an interview Joel did (also on YouTube) the business card video is a parody of himself.

I wonder how well this video would do on "Funny or Die". Great laugh. Thanks Adam. Loved the guys passion but if he was sitting across the table from me, I'd think he was full of crap.

Great salesmanship. That's how you sell a customer if you want his business card business once and make a lot of money on it. Will that customer return? Probably not for business cards but for marketing ideas I would. Why not for business cards? For two reasons:

1) Many people do have and use Rolodex - I do all the time even though I have all my contacts in my iphone which is synced over the air with my google account which is synced over the air with my outlook which is synced with my iPad, which is... you get the point. I still use Rolodex, for some strange reason when I'm on the phone in the office and I need to get at a contact fast my assumption is that it is faster to roll the rolodex and if your card does not fit into my rolodex then it is not there but either in my drawer or in the can and you better hope and pray that I have transfered your information into the "CLOUD";

2) Because business cards do not sell. People sell. I have yet to get a sale from giving a business card no matter how funky it is. Ten years ago as I began my career in print selling I did attend a sales seminar with Jack Daly and he sold me on the same business card idea. That's right. He sold me. Did it sell for me? Nope.

My card now: white offset cover with black ink only. But I follow-up persuasively everyone to whom I gave one as if that card cost me a thousand bucks. For a long time I recommended all my customers to print single sided only but now I tell everyone to print a QR code on the back.

Here's my advice and "m-bossed.com" for business cards: add as many social media contact points as possible: facebook, twitter, linkedin, aboutme, vimeo etc.

I agree with the quality of the stock and simplicity of the colors, but not the size issue. I would answer that issue by microperfing a standard-size business card tear out.

Mine is now a colorful trading card with a QR Code - always a conversation starter !
